Mara came back to the staff kitchen for one reason . She wanted her tutor's original line on the noticeboard before the open evening , because the shortened one made him sound careless . The printout was already pinned , and already wrong . He had written that an idea survives only if someone will carry it and let it change . The poster kept the first half . Under a photograph of smiling students it said , An idea survives if someone carries it . Change was gone . So was the cost . " People read that one , " said Lewis , rinsing mugs . She could hear him refusing to stop at the easy half . She took the pin out . For a moment she wanted the evening to use his words exactly , as a rescue . Then she pictured the donor , the student , and Priya's nod , and saw the rescue fail . The room had already chosen a version it could pass along . Exact wording would stay in her bag . " Print both , " she said . " His line at the top . Under it , the short one , labeled as what people actually repeat . I will not pretend they are the same sentence . " Lewis nodded . " That may annoy everyone . " " Good . " She smoothed the paper flat , not to hang it , but to see the cut . The idea had left the room simpler than it entered . She could not force the missing half back into other people's mouths . She could refuse to call the remainder his .
