Colette stopped Farid in the gallery doorway because she wanted him to look at the bowl before he signed the veto . His note said a damaged object in the first case would make the museum look unable to afford whole things . The bowl sat under a small lamp . Pale clay , a dark lip , and a crack from rim to foot , mended with a line of gold - colored lacquer . Colette had put it there because the mend was the point . Farid kept his coat on . " It is broken , " he said . " It was broken . Someone mended it and went on using it . " " Then put it with the study pieces . People who come in from the street want something intact . I am not being cruel . I am telling you how it reads from the door . " She had an answer ready , the one she gave students : what counts as finished is learned , not obvious . She heard the lecture forming and left it unsaid . Farid was not asking for a class . From where he stood , the gold line looked like damage with a costume . She lifted the bowl into the light . " My grandmother kept a cup like this on a high shelf and never drank from it . She thought the crack made it worth keeping . I put this one in front for her reason , and I assumed anyone who looked would see it . " Farid did not take the bowl . " In my uncle's house a cracked cup went to the back of the cupboard . You did not set it out for guests . That was manners . You are asking me to call his rule crude so that yours can stay in the light . " Colette set the bowl back on its cloth . She had wanted a single outcome : her judgment , explained until his gave way . She could picture both cupboards . Neither was a mistake a clearer paragraph would fix . " Leave it in front , " she said . " And take your name off the label . I will not make you sponsor a taste you do not share . If visitors dislike it , that sits with me . " He looked at the gold line longer than he had from the door . " I still think it looks hurt . " " I know , " Colette said . " That is one way of seeing it . It does not have to become your sentence on a plaque . " He nodded and went to find the registrar . Colette stayed . She had come in to convert him . She left the bowl where it was , and she let his refusal stand beside it without a softer wording .
