In October 2003 , in Palo Alto , California , Andy Rubin wanted a camera that could do more than take a picture . He started a small company with three friends : Rich Miner , Nick Sears , and Chris White . They called it Android . They wanted a system for digital cameras , so a camera could connect to a computer and to the internet . That was the first plan . The plan changed . They saw phones in more and more hands . A camera could stay in a bag . A phone went out with a person every day . They wanted the new system on the phone , and they wanted many companies to be able to use it , not one company alone . The camera was the wrong object . The phone was already in the pocket . In July 2005 , Google bought Android . Rubin and his friends went to work there . They still wanted the same thing : a phone system that other companies could use , and a phone that could reach the internet . They worked on it until 2008 . For a long time there was no Android phone in a shop . There was only the work . In 2008 the first phone arrived . In the United States its name was the T - Mobile G1 . In other countries people called it the HTC Dream . It had a screen you could touch , and it had a keyboard that slid out . You could type on real keys . In a shop , a person could hold it , slide the keyboard , and look at the screen . The phone was a little heavy . The new part was the system inside . On the screen there was a small shop for apps . The name was Android Market . Years later that shop got a new name , the Google Play Store . At the start the shop was small . You could look for a map , a message , or a simple game . The phone was already more than a way to call . For years , each new Android version had a sweet name , and the names followed the alphabet . Cupcake came before Donut . Later came Froyo , short for frozen yogurt , and Ice Cream Sandwich . People liked to guess the next sweet . Then Google stopped those public names and used numbers . The guessing ended . The system stayed . Samsung , Xiaomi , and Motorola put Android on their phones . The same system could live on a simple phone or on a costly one . Andy Rubin and his friends had started with a camera in Palo Alto . They changed the plan and chose the phone . In 2008 the G1 slid open , and Android left the office .
