II . The Cake and the Wine One day , very early , her mother calls the girl . “ Red Riding Hood , come here , please . ” The girl goes to the kitchen . Her mother is there . On the table there is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine . “ Yes , Mum . What is it ? ” asks the girl . “ Grandma is ill , ” says her mother . “ She is very weak . She cannot get out of bed . ” “ Oh , poor Grandma ! What can we do , Mum ? ” asks Red Riding Hood . “ Look , ” says her mother . “ Here is a piece of cake and a bottle of wine . I made the cake last night , and it is very good . Take the cake and the wine to Grandma . They can help her to get strong again . ” “ Yes , Mum ! I am going right now , ” says the girl . “ Am I going alone ? ” “ Yes , my dear . You are a big girl now , and you know the way well , ” says her mother . Red Riding Hood puts on her red hood and her white apron . Then she puts the cake and the bottle in her apron . She holds it with both hands . The bottle is a little heavy . “ Listen to me , my dear , ” says her mother . “ Go now , before it gets hot . In the wood , walk slowly and carefully . Do not run . And do not leave the path . ” “ Why not , Mum ? ” asks the girl . “ If you run , you might fall , ” says her mother . “ If you fall , the bottle breaks . And then poor Grandma gets nothing . ” “ That is true , ” says Red Riding Hood . “ And be good at Grandma’s house , ” says her mother . “ When you go into her room , first say good morning . After that , you can look around the house , but not before . And give Grandma my love . ” “ Yes , Mum . I will not run . I will not leave the path . And I will say good morning to Grandma , ” says Red Riding Hood . “ I will be very careful . I promise . ” Then she and her mother shake hands on it . Her mother kisses her on the head . “ Goodbye , my dear . See you this evening , ” she says . “ Goodbye , Mum ! ” says the girl . Red Riding Hood leaves the house . It is very early . The sun is out , but it is not hot yet . The girl walks down the street in her red hood and her white apron . She walks slowly . She does not want to break the bottle . In the street , a woman says hello to her . “ Good morning , Red Riding Hood . You are up very early today ! ” says the woman . “ I am going to my grandma’s house . She is ill , ” says the girl . “ Oh , poor thing ! Give her a kiss from me , ” says the woman . “ Yes , of course . Goodbye ! ” says Red Riding Hood . The girl walks past the last houses of the village . In front of her is the wood , big and green . Grandma’s house is there , half an hour away .
