I . The Old Donkey A man has a donkey . The donkey is big and grey , with long ears , strong legs and dark eyes . He is a good animal . The donkey works hard for his master . Every day he carries sacks of corn to the mill . The sacks are heavy , and the road is long . But the donkey never says no . He works in the sun , in the rain and in the snow . At the mill , the miller opens the sacks and makes flour . Then the donkey walks home again . The next day , he goes back to the mill . One day goes by , and another , and another . Many years go by like this . But time goes by for donkeys too . Now the donkey is old . His legs are not strong any more . His back hurts . Every day the sacks feel heavier . The donkey walks very slowly . Sometimes he stops in the middle of the road and rests . One morning , the master puts two sacks on the donkey’s back . “ Come on , donkey ! To the mill ! ” says the master . The donkey takes one step . Then he takes another step . Then he stops . He cannot go on . “ Walk , donkey ! Walk ! ” shouts the master . The donkey wants to walk , but his legs do not want to . The master takes the sacks off the donkey’s back . He looks at the old animal and shakes his head . “ This donkey is no good any more , ” says the master . “ He is old and weak . He eats a lot , and he works very little . Why must I feed him ? I do not want to give him any more food . I must think what to do with him . ” The donkey hears these words . He is not a stupid donkey . He understands very well . “ No good wind is blowing here , ” he thinks . “ I am in danger . ” That night , the donkey does not sleep . He is alone in the stable . He looks at the moon through the window and thinks . “ What can I do now ? ” he thinks . “ I cannot stay here . I must go away . But where can I go ? I am an old donkey . ” He thinks and thinks . Then suddenly he has an idea . “ I know ! I will go to Bremen ! ” he thinks . “ Bremen is a big town . The town has its own band . They play at parties and in the streets . And people give them money and food . ” “ My legs are tired , but my voice is not , ” he thinks . “ My voice is very strong . I can play in the town band too ! ” Very quietly , the donkey sings : “ Hee - haw . ” Yes , his voice is still good . It is a big , strong voice . Very early in the morning , when everyone is asleep , the donkey leaves the stable . He goes slowly and quietly . Nobody sees him . On the road , he stops and looks at his home one last time . “ Goodbye , house . Goodbye , mill , ” he says softly . “ I am going to Bremen . I am going to be a town musician ! ” And the donkey walks away down the road to Bremen .
