IV . The Men in the Field The Gingerbread Man runs on . The road goes up a hill and down a hill . At the bottom of the hill , there is a big field . The grass in the field is long and yellow . The field is full of men . They are cutting the long grass . Each man has a long , sharp knife . They cut the grass and make hay for the animals . The Gingerbread Man runs along by the field , and he calls out to the men : “ I ran away from a little old woman and a little old man . I ran away from a barn full of men . And I can run away from you , I can ! ” The men look up from their work . “ Look at that ! ” says one of the men . “ A little gingerbread man ! ” “ I would like a bite of him , ” says another man . “ Come on ! After him ! ” They put down their knives and run after him . But the grass is long , and the men cannot run fast in it . The Gingerbread Man is very small . He runs under the long grass , and the grass does not stop him . Soon he is far in front of the men . He looks back and shouts : “ Run , run , as fast as you can ! You can’t catch me , I’m the Gingerbread Man ! ” The men stop . They stand in the long grass and look at him . “ We cannot catch him , ” they say . “ Let’s go back to work . ” And the men in the field cannot catch him . V . The Cow The Gingerbread Man runs on and on . Now the road goes past a farm . By the side of the road there is a cow . She is big and brown , with white spots . She is eating grass . The Gingerbread Man runs up to her , and he calls out : “ I ran away from a little old woman and a little old man . I ran away from a barn full of men and a field full of men . And I can run away from you , I can ! ” The cow looks up . She sees the Gingerbread Man , and she smells something sweet . “ Mmm , ” says the cow . “ What a nice smell ! A little brown cake ! Come here , little cake . ” She walks towards him . Then she starts to run . Her big feet go boom , boom , boom on the road . The Gingerbread Man laughs . He looks back and shouts : “ Run , run , as fast as you can ! You can’t catch me , I’m the Gingerbread Man ! ” The cow runs as fast as she can . But a cow is not very fast . She is big and heavy . Soon she is tired . She stops in the middle of the road . “ Moo ! ” she says . “ Come back ! I only want one little bite ! ” But the Gingerbread Man does not come back . He is far away now . And the cow cannot catch him .
