It is a long day , and his little legs are tired now . He cannot run any faster . The fox runs up behind him . In a moment , the fox catches the Gingerbread Man . Then he starts to eat him up . “ Oh dear ! ” says the Gingerbread Man . “ I am a quarter gone ! ” Then he says : “ Oh ! I am half gone ! ” Soon he says : “ I am three quarters gone ! ” And at last he says : “ I am all gone ! ” And after that , the Gingerbread Man never says a word again . VIII . Another Story : Johnny - Cake Here is another old story . It is a lot like the story of the Gingerbread Man . But in this story , the one who runs away is a Johnny - cake . A Johnny - cake is a flat , round cake . It is made of corn . An old man , an old woman and a little boy live in a little house with a garden . One morning , the old woman makes a Johnny - cake . She puts it in the oven . “ Watch the Johnny - cake , ” she says to the little boy . “ Your father and I are going out to work in the garden . ” “ Yes , Mother , ” says the little boy . So the old man and the old woman go out to the garden . They take their hoes and start to work on the potatoes . The little boy stays in the house and watches the oven . But he does not watch it all the time . He looks out of the window . He looks at the cat . He plays with his shoes . Then , all at once , he hears a noise . He looks up . The oven door opens with a pop ! And out of the oven jumps the Johnny - cake ! The Johnny - cake falls on the floor . Then he starts to roll . He rolls over and over , towards the open door of the house . “ Oh no ! ” says the little boy . He runs to shut the door . But the Johnny - cake is too quick for the boy . The Johnny - cake rolls through the door , down the steps and out into the road . The little boy runs after the Johnny - cake as fast as he can . “ Father ! Mother ! ” he shouts . “ The Johnny - cake is running away ! ” His father and mother hear the noise . They throw down their hoes and run after the Johnny - cake too . But the Johnny - cake is much faster than all three . Soon he is far away . The old man , the old woman and the little boy cannot run any more . They sit down on a bank by the road to rest . They are all out of breath . “ Where is our Johnny - cake ? ” asks the old woman . “ Gone , ” says the old man .
