Dough is soft and white . The baker makes bread from it . The baker looks at the wolf’s feet . “ Dough on your feet ? ” he says . “ Well , all right . ” He does not ask any more questions . He takes some dough from his table . He puts it on the wolf’s feet , all four of them . Now the wolf’s feet are sticky and a little white . But they are not white enough . Under the dough you can still see some black . The wolf goes out , and he runs to the mill . The miller works there . A miller makes flour . Flour is white , like snow . The baker makes his dough from flour and water . The miller has flour on his clothes and flour in his hair . “ Miller , ” says the wolf , “ put some white flour on my feet . ” The miller looks at the wolf . He looks at the wolf’s feet with the dough on them . Then he thinks to himself , “ This is strange . Why does a wolf want white feet ? He wants to trick somebody . Maybe he wants to hurt somebody . ” “ No , ” says the miller . “ I will not do it . ” The wolf comes close to him . He opens his big mouth , and he shows his long teeth . “ Put flour on my feet , ” he says , “ or I will eat you . ” Now the miller is very afraid . He does not want to die . So he takes his flour , and he puts it on the wolf’s feet . Now the feet are white . They are white like the feet of the mother goat . The miller is ashamed . But he is afraid of the wolf . People are often like that . When they are afraid , they do bad things . The wolf looks down at his white feet . “ Very good , ” he says . And he runs back to the little house . V . The Third Knock The kids are in the house . It is quiet , and they are waiting for their mother . “ When will Mother come home ? ” asks the second kid . “ Soon , ” says the oldest kid . “ She has a lot of food to find . There are seven of us . ” “ I am hungry , ” says the fourth kid . “ You are always hungry , ” says the sixth kid , and they laugh a little . Then there is a knock at the door . Knock , knock , knock ! It is the third time . “ Open the door , children , ” says a soft voice . “ Your dear mother is home . I have a present from the forest for each of you . ” The kids look at each other . The voice is soft . It is like their mother’s voice . “ Is it Mother ? ” asks the third kid . “ We don’t know , ” says the oldest kid . “ Remember , the wolf has a soft voice now . ” She goes to the door . “ First show us your feet , ” she calls . “ Then we will know if you are our dear mother . ” Slowly the wolf puts his feet in through the window . The kids look at them . The feet are white . They are white like snow . “ White feet ! ” cries the fourth kid . “ White feet and a soft voice , ” says the fifth kid . “ It is Mother . It must be Mother . ”
