IX . The Mock Turtle’s Story “ I’m so glad to see you again , my dear ! ” said the Duchess , and she took Alice’s arm in a very friendly way . Alice was glad to find the Duchess in such a good mood . “ Perhaps it was only the pepper that made her so fierce in the kitchen , ” she thought . “ Pepper makes people hot - tempered , I’m sure . And sweets make children sweet . When I’m a Duchess , I won’t have any pepper in my kitchen at all . ” “ You’re thinking about something , my dear , ” said the Duchess into her ear . “ I can’t tell you the moral of that right now , but I’ll remember it soon . ” A moral is the lesson that a story teaches . “ Everything has a moral , if you can only find it . ” And she rested her chin on Alice’s shoulder . It was a very sharp chin , but Alice did not want to be rude . “ Look , the game is going better now , ” said the Duchess . “ And the moral of that is : ‘ It’s love that makes the world go round ! ’ ” “ Somebody said that it goes round faster when everybody minds their own business , ” whispered Alice . “ Well , that means almost the same thing , ” said the Duchess . “ Thinking again ? ” asked the Duchess after a while , and she dug her chin a little deeper into Alice’s shoulder . “ I have a right to think , ” said Alice , who was starting to feel annoyed . “ Just as much right as pigs have to fly , ” said the Duchess . “ And the moral of . . . ” But she did not finish . Her voice died away , and her arm began to shake . The Queen was standing in front of them with her arms folded , looking as dark as a storm . “ I’m warning you ! ” shouted the Queen , and she stamped her foot . “ Either you go , or your head goes ! Choose , now ! ” The Duchess chose , and she was gone in a moment . The game went on , and the Queen kept shouting “ Off with his head ! ” Each time , the soldiers had to stop being arches and take someone off to prison . After half an hour there were no arches left , and only the King , the Queen and Alice were still playing . Then the Queen , quite out of breath , asked Alice , “ Have you met the Mock Turtle yet ? ” “ No , ” said Alice . “ What is a Mock Turtle ? ” “ It’s what Mock Turtle soup is made from , ” said the Queen . Mock turtle soup was a real soup , but it had no turtle in it . “ Mock ” means “ not real ” . “ Come on , and he’ll tell you his story . ” As they left , Alice heard the King quietly forgive all the prisoners , and she was very glad .
