“ Your medicine is much nastier , isn’t it , Father ? ” said Wendy , and she ran to get his bottle . Mr Darling’s face fell . “ Let’s both take it at the same time , ” said Wendy . “ One , two , three ! ” Michael swallowed his medicine , but Mr Darling hid his glass behind his back . “ Oh , Father ! ” cried Wendy . Mr Darling did not like the way his children were looking at him . “ It was only a joke , ” he said . “ Look , I’ll pour it into Nana’s bowl . She will think it is milk ! ” Nana drank it . Then she gave him a sad look and crept into her kennel . Wendy put her arms round Nana , and that made her father angrier still . “ That dog will not stay in my nursery for one more hour ! ” he shouted , and he chained Nana up in the yard . Afterwards he felt ashamed . Mrs Darling put the children to bed and lit their three night - lights . Outside , Nana was barking . “ That is not her unhappy bark , ” said Wendy . “ That is the bark she makes when she smells danger . ” Mrs Darling looked out of the window . The sky was full of stars , and she suddenly felt afraid . “ Can anything hurt us , Mother , after the night - lights are lit ? ” asked Michael . “ Nothing , my precious , ” she said . “ They are the eyes a mother leaves behind to guard her children . ” “ Mother , ” said Michael , “ I’m glad of you . ” It was the last thing she heard him say for a long time . Mr and Mrs Darling walked to number 27 through a little snow . The stars watched them go . Stars can only watch and never do anything , but the little ones still love fun . As soon as the door of number 27 closed , the smallest star of all cried out , “ Now , Peter ! ” II . Wendy Meets Peter The three night - lights yawned and went out . Now a much brighter light was flying round the nursery , looking in every drawer . When it stopped for a second , you could see that it was a fairy . She was no longer than your hand , and her name was Tinker Bell . The window blew open , and Peter dropped in . “ Tink , ” he whispered , “ where did they put my shadow ? ” Tink answered with a sound like tiny golden bells . That is the fairy language . Peter pulled everything out of the chest of drawers and found his shadow . He was so happy that he shut Tink in a drawer by mistake . He tried to stick his shadow on with soap , but it would not stick . So he sat on the floor and cried . His crying woke Wendy . She was not frightened at all . “ Boy , ” she said politely , “ why are you crying ? ” Peter stood up and bowed to her beautifully , and she bowed to him from the bed . He told her his name , and she asked where he lived . “ Second to the right , ” said Peter , “ and then straight on till morning . ” “ What a funny address ! And does your mother write to you there ? ” “ I don’t have a mother , ” said Peter . “ Oh , Peter , no wonder you were crying ! ”
