In the nursery , Peter flew round the room . “ Just think lovely thoughts , ” he said , “ and they lift you up . ” But nobody can fly without fairy dust , and Peter blew a little on each of them . Michael let go first . “ I’m flying ! ” he screamed . Soon they were all flying and bumping their heads on the ceiling . “ There are pirates on the island , ” said Peter . “ Pirates ! ” cried John , and he put on his Sunday hat . “ Let’s go at once ! ” Just then Mr and Mrs Darling ran into the street with Nana . They looked up and saw shadows on the nursery curtain . Three little figures were flying round and round . No , not three . Four ! They rushed upstairs . But the little stars blew the window open , and the smallest star called , “ Look out , Peter ! ” “ Come ! ” cried Peter , and he flew out into the night . The others followed him . When the parents ran into the nursery , the birds had flown . III . Second to the Right “ Second to the right , and straight on till morning . ” That was the way to the Neverland , Peter had said . But not even a bird with a map could find a place with those words . Peter just said anything that came into his head . They flew for many days and nights , over the sea and through the clouds . When they were hungry , Peter took food from the mouths of birds . The worst danger was sleep . When Michael fell asleep , he dropped like a stone towards the sea . Peter always caught him , but only at the last moment . Sometimes Peter flew away for adventures of his own . When he came back , he had often forgotten them . Once Wendy had to tell him her name . At last golden arrows from the setting sun pointed to an island . The children knew it at once . “ There’s the lagoon ! ” cried John . “ Look , Michael , there’s your cave ! ” But then the sun went down , and the island grew dark . At home it had only been a game . Now it was real , and there were no night - lights and no Nana . Peter told them about the pirates . Their captain was James Hook , the most terrible pirate of all . “ I cut off his right hand , ” said Peter . “ Now he has an iron hook instead . But if we ever meet Hook in a fight , you must leave him to me . ” Tinker Bell’s light was shining round them . “ The pirates have brought out Long Tom , their big gun , ” said Peter . “ If they see Tink’s light , they will fire . ” A fairy cannot put her light out , so they hid Tink in John’s hat , and Wendy carried it . Then there was a terrible crash . The pirates had fired Long Tom ! Nobody was hurt , but the wind of the shot blew them apart . Peter was blown far out to sea . John and Michael were alone in the dark . Wendy was blown high into the sky with only Tinker Bell . Tink jumped out of the hat . Fairies are so small that they have room for only one feeling at a time , and Tink’s feeling now was hate . She flew in front of Wendy , and her bells seemed to say , “ Follow me . ” Wendy called for Peter and her brothers , but nobody answered . So , lost and very tired , she followed Tink .
