“ Perhaps I have , but I am still frightened , ” said the Lion . “ I want the kind of courage that makes me forget my fear . ” “ Very well . I will give you some tomorrow . ” “ And my heart ? ” asked the Tin Woodman . “ I think you are wrong to want a heart , ” said Oz . “ It makes most people unhappy . ” “ I don’t mind being unhappy , if you give me a heart . ” “ Very well . Come tomorrow , ” said Oz . “ I have played the Wizard for so many years . I can play it a little longer . ” “ And how will I get back to Kansas ? ” asked Dorothy . “ Give me two or three days to think about it , ” said Oz . “ But you must all keep my secret . Tell nobody that I am a humbug . ” XII . The Gifts and the Balloon The next morning Oz took off the Scarecrow’s head and emptied out the straw . He mixed some bran , the brown outside part of wheat , with a lot of pins and needles . Then he filled the Scarecrow’s head with it and fixed the head on again . “ Now you have lots of brand - new brains , ” he said . The Scarecrow’s head was fat at the top now , and a few pins and needles were sticking out of it . “ I feel very wise , ” he told his friends . “ That shows that he is sharp , ” said the Lion . Then Oz cut a small hole in the Tin Woodman’s chest . From a drawer he took a pretty heart made of silk and filled with sawdust . “ Is it a kind heart ? ” asked the Woodman . “ Oh , very kind , ” said Oz . He put the heart inside and closed the hole with a tin patch . For the Lion , Oz poured a green drink into a dish . “ Drink this , ” he said . “ When it is inside you , it will be courage . Courage is always inside you , you know . ” The Lion drank it all . “ How do you feel now ? ” asked Oz . “ Full of courage ! ” said the Lion happily . When he was alone , Oz smiled to himself . “ It was easy to make those three happy , ” he said . “ But how can I get Dorothy back to Kansas ? ” For three days Dorothy heard nothing . Her friends were very happy with their gifts , but she was sad . On the fourth day Oz called her . “ I think I have found a way , ” he said . “ You came here through the air , and so did I . I cannot make a cyclone , but I can make a balloon . And I will come with you . I am tired of being a humbug . I would much rather go back and work in a circus again . ” For three days Oz cut long pieces of green silk , and Dorothy sewed them together . At last they had a great green balloon . Oz tied a big basket under it . Then he told the people that he was going to visit a great brother Wizard in the clouds . Everybody came to watch . The Tin Woodman made a fire , and hot air from the fire filled the balloon . Slowly it rose until the basket was just touching the ground . Oz climbed into the basket . “ While I am away , ” he told the people , “ the Scarecrow will rule over you . Obey him as you obey me . ”
