“ It is an ordinary whip . But I don’t know why it is tied like that . ” “ That is not so ordinary , is it ? Ah , it is a wicked world . And when a clever man uses his brains for crime , it is the worst of all . ” I never saw my friend’s face so dark and serious . Out on the lawn he spoke at last . “ Miss Stoner , you must follow my advice in every way . Your life may depend on it . My friend and I must spend the night in your room . ” Miss Stoner and I both stared at him in surprise . “ Yes , it must be so . From the village inn over there , we can see your windows . When your stepfather comes back , stay in your room and say you have a headache . When you hear him go to bed , open the shutters of your window and put your lamp there as a signal to us . Then go quietly into your old room . You can manage there for one night . ” “ Mr Holmes , did my sister die of a sudden fright ? ” asked Miss Stoner . “ No , I do not think so . I think there was something more real . But I want clearer proof before I speak . Now we must go , before Dr Roylott comes back . Be brave , and do what I have told you . ” X . A Night at Stoke Moran Holmes and I took two rooms at the Crown Inn . From our window we could see the gate and the wing of the old house . As it grew dark , Dr Roylott drove past . A few minutes later a lamp was lit in one of the rooms . “ I am not sure that I should take you with me tonight , Watson , ” said Holmes . “ There is real danger . ” “ Can I help you ? ” “ Your help may be very valuable . ” “ Then I shall certainly come . But you must have seen more in those rooms than I did . ” “ No , but perhaps I understood a little more . Miss Stoner said her sister could smell the doctor’s cigar . So I knew before we came that we would find a small opening between the two rooms . Then look at the dates . An air hole is made , a rope is hung , and a lady who sleeps in the bed dies . And did you notice that the bed was fixed to the floor , under the air hole and the rope ? I call it a rope and not a bell - rope , because it was clearly never meant to ring a bell . ” “ Holmes , ” I cried , “ I think I begin to see . We are only just in time to stop a horrible crime . ” “ When a doctor goes wrong , he is the worst of criminals . He has nerve and he has knowledge . But I think , Watson , that we shall be cleverer still . ” Late that night , just as the clock struck eleven , a single bright light shone out among the trees . “ That is our signal , ” said Holmes , and he jumped to his feet .
