“ Ha ! You are trying to put me off , are you ? ” said our visitor , and he shook his whip . “ I know you , you rascal ! You are Holmes , the busybody who pokes his nose into other people’s business ! ” Holmes laughed happily . “ Your conversation is most amusing . When you go out , please close the door . There is a cold wind . ” “ Don’t you dare to meddle in my business ! I am a dangerous man to have as an enemy . Look at this . ” He took the poker , the heavy steel rod that we used for the fire , and he bent it into a curve with his huge brown hands . “ Stay out of my hands ! ” he shouted . He threw the poker into the fireplace and marched out . “ He seems a very pleasant person , ” said Holmes , laughing . “ I am not as big as he is , but my hands are not much weaker than his . ” He picked up the poker , and with one sudden effort he made it straight again . “ Now , Watson , I am going out . I want to see the will of Miss Stoner’s mother . A will is the paper that says who gets a person’s money after they die . ” At one o’clock Holmes came back . “ Today the mother’s money brings in about seven hundred and fifty pounds a year , ” he said . “ Each daughter can have two hundred and fifty pounds a year if she marries . So if both girls married , the doctor would have very little left . That gives him the strongest reasons to stop any marriage . Please put your revolver in your pocket , Watson . A revolver is a good argument with gentlemen who can tie steel pokers in knots . ” We took the train to Leatherhead and then a small carriage to Stoke Moran . Miss Stoner hurried across the fields to meet us , her face full of joy . “ Dr Roylott has gone to London , ” she cried , “ and he will probably not be back before evening . ” “ We have already met the doctor , ” said Holmes , and he told her what happened . Miss Stoner went white . “ So he followed me ! ” she cried . “ Lock your door against him tonight , ” said Holmes . “ Now please show us the rooms . ” IX . A Bell That Does Not Ring The house was built of grey stone . One wing was almost a ruin . In the other wing , where the family lived , builders ’ poles stood against the end wall , but we saw no workmen . Holmes studied the windows . “ This window belongs to your old room , the middle one to your sister’s , and the one nearest the main house to Dr Roylott’s ? By the way , that end wall does not seem to need any repairs . ” “ It did not need them . I believe it was only an excuse to move me out of my room . ” “ Ah ! That is interesting . Will you kindly go into your room and close the shutters ? ” Miss Stoner did so , and Holmes tried hard to force the shutter open . But there was no crack for a knife , and the iron hinges were built firmly into the stone . “ Hmm ! ” he said , and he scratched his chin . “ My idea has some problems . Nobody could pass these shutters when they are closed . Let us see the inside . ”
