III . Jonathan’s Diary : The Three Women I decided to say nothing to the Count . I had to be clever , and I had to wait . One evening the Count asked me to stay in the castle for a whole month . He said it politely , but I knew that it was an order . Then he asked me to write three short letters to Mr Hawkins and to Mina . “ Write only about business , ” he said , “ and say that you are well . ” He told me what dates to put on them . The first letter said that my work was nearly finished . The second said that I was leaving soon . The third said that I had left the castle . I understood his plan . He wanted everybody at home to think that I left safely . That same night he gave me a warning . “ If you leave these rooms , my young friend , do not go to sleep in any other part of the castle . It is old and has many memories . Bad dreams come to those who sleep in the wrong place . ” Later I looked out of my window at the moon . Below me I saw the Count’s head come out of another window . Then I saw his whole body . He began to climb down the high castle wall , face down , with his black cloak spread out round him like great wings . He moved as fast as a lizard . What kind of man was he ? Was he a man at all ? I felt the cold hand of fear on my heart . A few nights later the Count went out again , and I explored the castle . I pushed hard at a door in another part of the building , and it opened . Inside there was a pretty old room , where ladies probably sat and sewed long ago . The moon was shining in through the windows , and I felt calm there . I sat down and wrote in my diary . Then I lay down on a sofa , and I fell asleep . I do not know if I dreamed it . In the moonlight there were three young women . They were dressed like fine ladies , and they made no shadows on the floor . Two of them were dark , with thin noses like the Count’s . The third had golden hair and pale blue eyes . All three had very red lips and bright white teeth . They whispered together and laughed . Their laugh was sweet , but it was also hard , like the sound of glass . “ Go on ! ” said one of the dark women . “ You are first . ”
