That night I ran through the forest , howling like a wild animal . I hated everyone . But most of all I hated you , my creator . You made me and then threw me into this cruel world alone . The next morning I went back to my hovel and waited , but nobody came out of the cottage . I heard Felix talking to the owner . “ My father’s life is in danger , ” he said , “ and my sister and Safie will never forget their horror . We are leaving today . ” They never came back . In my rage I burned the cottage to the ground . Then I decided to find you . Your papers told me that you came from Geneva . I only knew that it lay to the south - west , so I followed the sun . I travelled at night , so that nobody would see me . Snow fell , and the rivers froze . One morning in spring I was walking through a wood . The sun was warm , and for a moment I felt happy . Then a young girl came running along a river , laughing . Suddenly she slipped and fell into the fast water . I jumped in , pulled her out and tried to wake her . But a man came running . He took the girl from my arms , and when I followed him , he shot me with his gun . The bullet went into my shoulder . So this was my reward for saving a life ! For weeks I lay in pain in the woods , and my heart filled with hatred . At last I reached Geneva . One evening , while I was resting in a field , a beautiful little boy came running by . I thought : this child is too young to fear ugly faces . I will take him with me and teach him to be my friend . I caught the boy . He put his hands over his eyes and screamed . “ Let me go ! ” he cried . “ Monster ! Ugly thing ! My papa is Monsieur Frankenstein . He will punish you ! ” “ Frankenstein ! ” I said . “ Then you belong to my enemy . ” The boy kept screaming . I held his throat to stop the noise , and in a moment he lay dead at my feet . On his chest I saw a picture on a chain . It showed a beautiful woman . For a moment her face made me gentle . Then I remembered that no woman like her would ever smile at me , and my anger came back . I went into a barn to hide . A young woman was sleeping there on the straw . It was Justine , although I did not know her name then . I thought : this woman will never smile at me either . Let her pay for my crime . So I put the picture into a fold of her dress , and I ran away . X . Victor’s Story : A Companion The creature finished his story and looked at me . “ I am alone , ” he said , “ and I am miserable . People will not live with me . But a woman as ugly as I am will not turn away from me . You must make me a companion , a creature like me . Only you can do it , and I demand it from you . ”
