At Mr Kirwin’s house , some fishermen told their story . The night before , they had found a man’s body on the beach . He was young and handsome , and there were black marks of fingers on his neck . A woman had seen a boat with one man in it leaving the beach near that place . Mr Kirwin took me to see the body . I looked at it , and I cried out . It was Henry Clerval . “ My dearest Henry ! ” I cried . “ Have my wicked plans killed you too ? Two have already died because of me , and now you ! ” Then I fell to the ground . For two months I lay in prison , ill with fever . Mr Kirwin was kind to me . He brought a doctor , and he wrote to my father . When my father came into the room , I cried for joy . “ Are you all safe ? ” I asked him . “ Is Elizabeth safe ? Is Ernest ? ” He told me that they were well . At the trial the judges learned that I was still on the island in Orkney when Henry died . So I was free . But I did not feel free . I only wanted to go home and protect my family . XII . Victor’s Story : The Wedding Night On our way home , my father and I stopped in Paris . There I got a letter from Elizabeth . “ Dear Victor , ” she wrote , “ perhaps you love someone else , and you want to marry me only because your mother wished it . If so , please tell me . I want your happiness more than anything . ” I answered at once . “ My dear Elizabeth , ” I wrote , “ I love only you . But I have a dark secret . I will tell you everything on the day after our wedding . Until then , please do not ask me about it . ” When we came home , Elizabeth met me with tears . She was thinner and paler than before , but her eyes were as kind as ever . We decided to marry in ten days . I remembered the monster’s words : “ I shall be with you on your wedding - night . ” I believed that he wanted to kill me that night . So I carried pistols and a knife with me every day . The wedding day came . Everyone was happy , and I tried to look happy too . After the wedding , Elizabeth and I crossed the lake in a boat . We planned to spend the night at Evian , a small town on the other side . The next day we wanted to travel on to the Lake of Como , where Elizabeth owned a house . It was a beautiful afternoon , and Elizabeth held my hand . “ Why are you so sad , my love ? ” she asked . “ Be happy . Look how beautiful everything is ! ” At eight o’clock in the evening , we arrived at the inn in Evian . Soon a strong wind began to blow , and heavy rain began to fall . I grew more and more nervous . My hand held the pistol in my coat , and I looked into every dark corner . Elizabeth saw my fear . “ What is frightening you , dear Victor ? ” she asked . “ Be calm , my love , ” I said . “ This night is dangerous , very dangerous . But after tonight all will be well . ”
