I did not want her to see the fight . So I asked her to go to bed , and she went . I searched the whole inn for my enemy , but I did not find him . Suddenly I heard a terrible scream . It came from Elizabeth’s room . At that moment I understood everything . The monster did not want my death . He wanted hers . I ran into the room . Elizabeth was lying across the bed , and she was not breathing . The mark of his hand was on her neck . I fell to the floor . When I woke up , people from the inn were standing around me . Someone had laid Elizabeth gently on the bed , with a handkerchief over her face and neck . She looked as if she was asleep . I held her in my arms , but she was cold . Then I looked up . How can we catch him ? ” I saw that he did not really believe me . I understood that I had to find the monster myself . XIII . Victor’s Story : The Chase I left Geneva for ever . I took some money and my mother’s jewels with me . On my last night there , I went to the cemetery . I knelt by the graves of William , Elizabeth and my father . “ By this holy earth , ” I said , “ and by the spirits of my dead , I swear to find the monster . I will not rest until one of us dies . ” A loud , wild laugh answered me . Then a voice close to my ear whispered , “ Good , you miserable man ! You have decided to live . That pleases me . ” I ran towards the voice , but he escaped . The moon came out , and I saw him running away faster than any man .
