From that night I followed him . I followed him down the river Rhône to the Mediterranean Sea . There I saw him hide on a ship to the Black Sea , and I took the same ship . Then I followed him through the wild lands of Tartary and Russia . Sometimes frightened villagers told me which way he went . Sometimes he left signs for me , because he wanted me to follow him . He wrote messages on trees and stones . “ My rule is not over yet , ” said one of them . “ You live , and my power is complete . Follow me . I am going to the eternal ice of the north . You will feel the cold , but I will not . ” Sometimes he even left food for me , so that I would not die before the end of our chase . Another message said : “ Get ready ! Your work is only beginning . Wrap yourself in furs and take food . Soon we will start a journey that will feed my hatred . ” Winter came . The snow grew deeper , and ice covered the rivers . At last I came to a small village by the frozen sea . The people told me that a giant monster had come there the night before . He had a gun and many pistols , and everyone was terrified of him . He took their winter food , a sledge and a team of dogs . Then he drove away across the ice , in a direction where there was no land at all . I bought a sledge and dogs , and I followed him onto the frozen sea . For three weeks I travelled across the ice . It was terribly cold . Several of my dogs died . Then one day I saw a dark shape on the ice ahead . It was him ! My heart jumped with joy . Every day I came a little closer . But then the sea began to roar under the ice . The ice cracked and broke with a sound like thunder . Soon there was open water between us , and I was left on a floating piece of ice . It grew smaller every hour . My dogs died one by one , and I thought that I would die too . Then I saw your ship , Walton . I made oars from my sledge , and slowly I moved my piece of ice towards you . You know the rest . Now I am dying . Promise me one thing , Walton . If he ever comes to you , do not let him live . Do not listen to him . He is clever , and his words are strong . They even moved my heart once . Remember William , Justine , Henry , Elizabeth and my father , and kill him . XIV . Walton’s Letters : Farewell My dear Margaret , You have now read Victor’s strange story . I cannot doubt it , because Victor showed me copies of Safie’s letters to Felix . The creature gave them to him on the mountain , as proof of his story . And we all saw the giant from our ship . Once I asked Victor how he had made the creature . “ Are you mad , my friend ? ” he said . “ Learn from my suffering , and do not add to your own . ” I love him like a brother , but he is very ill , and I am afraid that I will lose him .
