Then one question began to fill my mind . Where does life come from ? To understand life , I first had to understand death . So I studied the human body . I learned how it grows , and how it changes and breaks down after death . I spent days and nights in graveyards and in cold rooms where the dead lay . It was dark , unpleasant work , but I was never afraid . At last , after long months of work , I found the secret . I discovered how life begins . More than that , I learned how to give life to dead things . You look at me with hope in your eyes , Walton . You want me to tell you my secret . I will not tell you . Listen to my story , and you will understand why . Learn from me how dangerous knowledge can be . For a long time I did not know what to make . Then I decided to make a man . The small parts of the body were very difficult to work with , so I made him very big . He was about eight feet tall , much taller than any living man . I dreamed that a new kind of people would thank me for their lives . No father would ever deserve his children’s thanks as much as I would deserve theirs . I worked alone in a small room at the top of the house . Night after night I collected what I needed from graveyards and other dark places . I grew pale and thin . Summer came and went , but I did not see its beauty . I forgot my family and my friends . I lived like a man in a dream , and my nerves were very bad . Sometimes even a falling leaf frightened me . IV . Victor’s Story : A Dreary Night of November It was a dreary night of November , dark and wet , when I finished my work . It was already one o’clock in the morning . The rain was beating against the windows , and my candle was almost burnt out . I prepared my instruments , and I put a spark of life into the thing at my feet . Then , in the weak light , I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open . It breathed hard , and its arms and legs began to move . How can I describe what I felt ? I had chosen every part of him carefully , because I wanted him to be beautiful . Beautiful ! His yellow skin hardly covered the muscles underneath . His hair was long and black , and his teeth were very white . But this only made the rest worse : his watery eyes , his dry skin and his straight black lips . For almost two years I had worked for this moment . Now my beautiful dream was gone , and my heart was full of horror . I could not look at him . I ran out of the room and walked up and down in my bedroom . Then I lay down on the bed in my clothes and fell into a troubled sleep . I dreamed of Elizabeth . She was walking in the streets of Ingolstadt , young and healthy . I kissed her , but her lips turned the colour of death . Then her face changed , and I was holding the body of my dead mother .
