VI . Victor’s Story : The Meeting on the Glacier After Justine’s death I could not rest . At night I often went out alone in a boat on the lake . Sometimes I wanted to jump into the water and end my life . But then I thought of Elizabeth , my father and Ernest . What if the monster hurt them too ? I hated him , and I wanted to kill him . In August I travelled to the valley of Chamonix , at the foot of Mont Blanc . I hoped that the mountains would calm me . One morning I climbed Montanvert , a mountain above the valley , alone . From there I looked down at a huge glacier , a river of ice that moves very slowly down the mountain . People call it the Sea of Ice . I walked across it for two hours , and on the other side I sat down on a rock . For a moment I felt something like joy . Then I saw a man coming towards me over the ice . He was moving much faster than a man can move . He jumped easily over the deep cracks in the ice , and he was very tall . It was the creature . I shook with anger and horror . “ Devil ! ” I shouted . “ How dare you come near me ? I will kill you ! ” “ I expected this , ” said the creature . “ Everyone hates the unhappy . So how much you must hate me , the unhappiest of all living things ! You , my creator , hate me , your creature . You want to kill me . How can you play with life like that ? Do your duty to me , and I will do mine to you and to all people . If you agree to my conditions , I will leave you and your family in peace . If you refuse , I will kill all your remaining friends . ” I jumped at him , but he moved away easily . “ Be calm ! ” he said . “ Listen to me first . Remember , you made me stronger than you . But I will not fight you . I am your creature . I ought to be your Adam , but I am rather the fallen angel . I was good and kind once , but misery made me a monster . Make me happy , and I will be good again . ” “ Go away ! ” I said . “ I will not listen to you . We are enemies . ” “ How can I move you ? ” he said . “ Believe me , Frankenstein , I was good once . My heart was full of love . But I am alone , terribly alone . You , my creator , hate me , and other people hate me even more . These cold mountains are my home now , the only place where no one hunts me . Listen to my story . Then , if you can , destroy me . ” “ Take your ugly shape away from me , ” I said . “ I cannot bear to look at you . ” He put his huge hands over my eyes . “ Now you cannot see me , ” he said . “ But you can still listen . ” I thought about his words . For the first time I asked myself what a creator owes to his creature . Perhaps it was my fault that he was so unhappy . “ Come to the hut on the mountain , ” he said . “ The sun is still high . Before it goes down behind those snowy hills , you will hear my story . Then you can decide . ” He walked quickly across the ice , and I followed . We went into a small , empty hut , and he lit a fire . I sat down beside it , and he began his story .
