VII . The Creature’s Story : Alone in the World I remember my first days only as if through a fog . Light , sound and smell all came to me at once . Then the light became too strong , and I closed my eyes . I left your room in Ingolstadt , and I took some clothes with me because I felt cold . I went to a forest near the town . There I lay down by a stream . I was hungry and thirsty , so I ate berries from the bushes and drank the cold water . Then I slept . When I woke , it was dark . I was cold and afraid , and I sat down and cried . Soon a soft light rose over the trees . It was the moon , but I did not know its name yet . I looked at it with wonder . Days and nights passed , and I began to see things more clearly . I heard the sweet songs of the birds , and I tried to copy them . But the ugly sounds that came from my mouth frightened me , and I was silent again . One day I found a fire . Some poor travellers had left it burning in the forest . I loved its warmth , and I put my hand into the flames . I pulled it out quickly with a cry . How strange , I thought , that one thing can bring both pleasure and pain ! I learned to keep the fire alive with wood , and to cook nuts and roots on it . When winter came , food was hard to find . I left the forest and walked across the fields . One day I found a small hut . An old man was sitting inside by a fire , making his breakfast . When he saw me , he screamed and ran away . I ate his breakfast of bread , cheese , milk and wine . Later I came to a village . The houses looked wonderful to me . I went into one of them , but the children screamed , and a woman fainted . The whole village came out . Some people ran away , and others threw stones at me . I ran to the open country , hurt and afraid . In the evening I found a hovel , a very small , low shed made of wood . It stood against the back wall of a neat little cottage . I crept inside and lay down on the straw . It was dry and out of the wind , and nobody could see me there . I decided to stay . In the wall between my hovel and the cottage , there was a small crack . Through it I could see into one of the rooms . In the morning a young girl with a gentle face went out with a bucket . Then a young man came , looking sad , and carried wood into the house . Inside sat an old man with white hair . He was playing a guitar , and his music was sweeter than the songs of the birds . The girl knelt at his feet , and he smiled at her very kindly . At that moment I felt something new : pain and pleasure together . I turned away from the crack , because these feelings were too strong for me .
