Registro e varietà dell’inglese: formale e informale, britannico e americano

Esempio: **To whom** should I send it? in un testo formale e **Who** should I send it **to**? in un registro neutro; entrambe sono standard.

C2 Padronanza ·

È un errore solo ciò che è agrammaticale in ogni registro e varietà: to who I spoke, Would you mind to send. Le forme non standard (ain't, they was) si riconoscono, ma non si usano in un testo formale.

Il registro nella grammatica

Variante formale e variante informale (o neutra)
TrattoFormaleInformale o neutra

Contrazionido not, cannot, we willdon't, can't, we'll
Verboinvestigate, postpone, toleratelook into, put off, put up with
PassivoMy bike was stolen. My bike got stolen.
ConnettivoMoreover, consequentlyPlus, so
Lettera o emailDear Ms Lee ... Kind regardsHi Tom ... Cheers

Dopo una preposizione si usa solo whom: to whom, with whom. Senza preposizione Who did you contact? è una frase del tutto normale, e come soggetto si usa who in ogni registro: Who wrote the report? La formula fissa To whom it may concern è il saluto formale con whom.

LivelloEsempioGrammatica
DirettoSend me the file.imperativo
NeutroCould you send me the file?could + forma base
CorteseCould you possibly send me the file?possibly + forma base
Molto corteseWould you mind sending me the file?mind + -ing
PrudenteI was wondering if you could send me the file.past continuous + if you could + forma base
FormaleI would be grateful if you could send me the file.grateful if you could + forma base

L’inglese ha un solo you, quindi la cortesia passa a could, would, possibly e I was wondering. Una richiesta diretta non è un errore, ma davanti a un superiore risulta secca: I want to know è molto più brusco di I would like to know. Attenuatori frequenti: I'm afraid that, unfortunately, it seems that, a bit, slightly, I just wanted to check. Chiusure formali: Please find attached, I look forward to hearing from you (dopo look forward to si usa -ing), Yours sincerely; tra amici, Thanks in advance, Best, Cheers.

I connettivi secondo il registro

I connettivi formali moreover, furthermore, in addition, consequently, nevertheless, with regard to hanno equivalenti colloquiali: plus, also, so, though, about. Un avviso o un reclamo vuole i primi; un messaggio a un amico, i secondi. Anyway, by the way, I mean e though a fine frase (The flat is small. It is cheap, though.) appartengono alla conversazione.

Grammatica britannica e americana

Nell’ortografia l’inglese britannico scrive colour, centre, travelled, programme (televisivo), licence (sostantivo) e cheque; l’americano color, center, traveled, program, license e check.

ain'tam not, is not, are not, has not, have not
I didn't see nobody.I didn't see anybody.
Me and him went.He and I went.
They was late.They were late.
He don't know.He doesn't know.
I seen it.I saw it. / I have seen it.
them booksthose books

Il colloquiale Me and Tom went diventa per iscritto Tom and I went.

Lo stesso vale per flat e apartment o at the weekend e on the weekend. I calchi, invece, sbagliano: «In attesa di una Sua risposta» non è I am waiting for your answer, ma I look forward to hearing from you, e «Cordiali saluti» non è Cordial greetings, ma Kind regards. C’è poi la doppia negazione: in italiano «Non ho visto nessuno» è corretto, mentre in inglese standard si dice I didn't see anybody, perché I didn't see nobody è non standard. Infine «Vorrei sapere» si rende con I would like to know o I was wondering, non con I want to know.

Esempi

  • To whom should I address the complaint? A chi devo indirizzare il reclamo?
  • We regret that the meeting has been postponed.
  • The meeting got put off until Friday. La riunione è stata rimandata a venerdì.
  • Would you mind sending me the report? Ti dispiacerebbe mandarmi il rapporto?
  • I was wondering if you could move the deadline. Mi chiedevo se potessi spostare la scadenza.
  • I look forward to hearing from you. In attesa di una Sua risposta.
  • The committee have decided. (British) / The committee has decided. Il comitato ha deciso.
  • Prices have gotten higher since spring. (American) I prezzi sono saliti dalla primavera.
  • I just ate, so I'm not hungry. (American) Ho appena mangiato, quindi non ho fame.
  • The lift is broken, so take the stairs.

Se hai un dubbio, usa la forma che vale in entrambi: different from, Do you have, The committee has, organize.

Errori tipici

  • the person to who I spoke the person to whom I spoke dopo la preposizione solo whom; oppure the person I spoke to
  • Would you mind to send the file? Would you mind sending the file? dopo mind si usa -ing
  • I look forward to hear from you. I look forward to hearing from you. to qui è una preposizione, poi -ing
  • I am waiting for your answer. I look forward to hearing from you. calco di «in attesa di una Sua risposta»
  • Cordial greetings, Kind regards, calco di «Cordiali saluti»
  • I want to know if you can help. I would like to know if you can help. I want è troppo brusco, come dire «Voglio» invece di «Vorrei»
  • I didn't say nothing. I didn't say anything. in inglese standard una sola negazione
  • I have seen him yesterday. I saw him yesterday. con ieri serve il past simple

Domande frequenti

Cambiano il lessico (flat e apartment), l’ortografia (colour e color) e alcuni punti di grammatica: have got e have, gotten, il verbo con i nomi collettivi, at e on the weekend.

Whom o who?

Dopo una preposizione si usa solo whom: to whom, with whom. Come complemento oggetto senza preposizione whom è formale e who è neutro o colloquiale. Come soggetto sempre who: Who wrote it?

Gotten o got?

Gotten è il participio passato americano di get: Prices have gotten higher. In inglese britannico si dice have got.

Have got o have?

Have you got a car? è tipico dell’inglese britannico e Do you have a car? di quello americano, anche se la seconda forma è frequente pure in Gran Bretagna. Per questo Do you have va bene ovunque.

Prima della chiusura sta bene I look forward to hearing from you.

L’informale usa contrazioni, phrasal verbs, il passivo con get, plus e so. Entrambi sono standard e dipendono dalla situazione.
