Saturn is the sixth planet and is known for its beautiful rings. The rings are made of ice and rock. Saturn is also a gas giant like Jupiter. Uranus is the seventh planet and is very cold. It rotates on its side unlike other planets. Neptune is the eighth and farthest planet from the Sun. It has strong winds and is very cold.
The inner planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars. They are made of rock and metal. These planets are relatively small. The outer planets are Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. They are much larger and made mostly of gas and ice. The outer planets are also called gas giants.
The Moon is Earth only natural satellite. It orbits around Earth. The Moon does not have its own light. It shines because it reflects sunlight from the Sun. The Moon causes ocean tides on Earth. Tides are the rising and falling of sea levels. The Moon takes about 27 days to orbit Earth.
Asteroids are rocky objects that orbit the Sun. Most asteroids are found in the asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter. Comets are icy objects that develop tails when they approach the Sun. The tail always points away from the Sun because of the solar wind. Meteors are small pieces of rock that burn up in Earth atmosphere.
The Sun is the most important object in the Solar System. It contains 99.86 percent of all the mass in the Solar System. The Sun is made mostly of hydrogen and helium. It produces energy through nuclear fusion. This energy travels to Earth as light and heat. Without the Sun, life on Earth would not exist.
Scientists use telescopes and space probes to study the Solar System. Telescopes on Earth observe planets from far away. Space probes travel to planets to take close-up pictures and collect data. Astronauts have visited the Moon. Scientists hope to send humans to Mars in the future.
