A clearly fictional visit introduces Madrid's real municipal community garden programme, its associations, seedlings, training and environmental aims.
La visita de esta tarde es una escena imaginada, pero el programa es real. Llego a uno de esos huertos con Clara, una vecina del barrio. Ella me muestra una zona de cultivo, un espacio para el compost y un rincón con herramientas.
Primero llevamos hojas secas al montón de compost. Trabajamos por turnos: Clara mueve las hojas y yo llevo un cubo pequeño. No necesitamos hacer todo a la vez.
Después plantamos lechugas en una fila. El programa municipal ofrece plantones hortícolas a las asociaciones. Clara abre un agujero, yo pongo un plantón y los dos cubrimos sus raíces con tierra.
También usamos una regadera. Echamos agua despacio alrededor de cada planta. Luego guardamos la regadera y las herramientas en su lugar.
El Ayuntamiento ofrece formación y asesoramiento a las asociaciones del programa. También entrega materiales para apoyar el trabajo de los huertos. En nuestra tarde imaginada, Clara consulta una ficha antes de empezar una tarea nueva.
Al final de la tarde, no recogemos una cosecha: las lechugas necesitan tiempo. Dejamos el huerto limpio y anotamos el trabajo del día. Entiendo que un huerto comunitario no es solo una zona con plantas. También es un proyecto organizado por personas.
El programa de Madrid apoya proyectos de agricultura urbana sostenible. Su objetivo incluye la participación de la comunidad y la educación ambiental.
