En abril de 2025, K2-18 b volvió a ocupar titulares por una posible señal de sulfuro de dimetilo, o DMS, y disulfuro de dimetilo, o DMDS. La noticia parecía acercar una respuesta a la gran pregunta de la astrobiología. Sin embargo, la historia científica más reveladora no es la de una vida descubierta, sino la de una inferencia sometida a examen.

K2-18 b es un subneptuno que orbita una estrella enana roja. Su masa es unas 8,6 veces la de la Tierra y se encuentra en la zona habitable de su estrella, expresión que indica que, bajo ciertas condiciones, podría existir agua líquida. Esa posición no demuestra que haya un océano, una superficie habitable ni vida. El planeta puede poseer una envoltura gaseosa profunda y unas condiciones interiores muy distintas de las terrestres.

El telescopio espacial James Webb no fotografió organismos ni tomó una muestra de la atmósfera. Observó tránsitos: momentos en que el planeta pasa por delante de su estrella desde nuestra perspectiva. Una fracción de la luz estelar atraviesa la atmósfera planetaria antes de llegar al telescopio. Algunas longitudes de onda quedan absorbidas con mayor intensidad, y el espectro resultante contiene información sobre moléculas compatibles con esas bandas.

En 2023, un equipo que analizó datos de los instrumentos NIRISS y NIRSpec informó de metano y dióxido de carbono en la atmósfera de K2-18 b, además de un indicio mucho más débil de DMS. En 2025, el mismo grupo presentó observaciones del instrumento MIRI y sostuvo que los datos favorecían la presencia de DMS, DMDS o una combinación de ambos. Los autores hablaron de evidencia sugestiva, no de una detección de vida.

¿Por qué no basta con asociar una banda del espectro a una molécula? Porque la recuperación atmosférica es un problema inverso. Se parte de un espectro limitado y se comparan modelos que incluyen temperaturas, nubes, abundancias químicas y propiedades instrumentales. Combinaciones distintas pueden producir señales parecidas. La conclusión depende, por tanto, no solo de los datos, sino también de los supuestos del modelo y del tratamiento estadístico.

Tras el anuncio de 2025 aparecieron reanálisis independientes. Un estudio conjunto de las observaciones de NIRISS, NIRSpec y MIRI halló evidencia insuficiente para DMS o DMDS. Otro análisis mostró que el resultado cambiaba al modificar la manera de agrupar los datos de MIRI y atribuyó gran parte de la señal a ruido correlacionado. Estas discrepancias no convierten el trabajo inicial en inútil: delimitan qué afirmación resiste y cuál necesita nuevas observaciones.

La discusión también obliga a precisar qué significa biofirma. En la Tierra, el DMS está estrechamente vinculado a procesos biológicos, en especial en ambientes marinos. Pero una molécula no conserva automáticamente ese significado en cualquier planeta. Para interpretarla hay que conocer el contexto atmosférico, estudiar posibles rutas abióticas y comprobar si otras especies químicas explican las mismas bandas.

El caso tampoco respalda una búsqueda de vida "más allá del carbono". El metano, el dióxido de carbono, el DMS y el DMDS contienen carbono. Lo que K2-18 b pone a prueba es algo más sobrio: nuestra capacidad para distinguir entre una molécula presente, una explicación biológica posible y una prueba de vida.
