What you'll learn

Pretérito indefinido and imperfecto in narration, the pluperfect (había sido, había nacido), the imperfect subjunctive in si clauses and after para que (si yo tuviera, para que no se mojara), ojalá with the subjunctive, vocabulary of the church, confession, a provincial town, the theatre and family honour

This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of Leopoldo Alas “Clarín”’s novel La Regenta (1884-1885), retold in simple Spanish in 14 chapters that follow both volumes. In Vetusta, a sleepy cathedral city in the north of Spain, Ana Ozores, the young wife of the much older retired judge don Víctor Quintanar, is bored and lonely; her confessor, the powerful canon Fermín de Pas, wants to guide her soul, while Álvaro Mesía, the local Don Juan, sets out to seduce her, and the whole town watches. Level A2 suits learners who know the past tenses: sentences of about 8 words, the pretérito indefinido and imperfecto, and dialogue. About 9,600 words.
