What you'll learn

Pretérito indefinido and imperfecto in first-person narration, reflexive verbs in the past (me puse, me quité, me hice), tú commands and their negative subjunctive forms (hazte, quédate, no cambies, no creas), ir a + infinitive in the past (iba a encontrar), words of the pampa and gaucho life (rancho, pulpería, facón, boleadoras, malón, toldos, payada), proverbs and similes

This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of Martín Fierro, José Hernández’s gaucho poem in two parts, El gaucho Martín Fierro (1872) and La vuelta de Martín Fierro (1879), retold in simple Spanish prose with dialogue in 14 chapters. Fierro sings his own story to the guitar: drafted to a frontier fort, unpaid and punished, he deserts, finds his rancho in ruins, becomes an outlaw, joins sergeant Cruz, lives among the Indians and years later comes back to find his sons, who tell their own stories. Level A2 suits learners who know the past tenses: sentences of about 9 words, the pretérito indefinido and imperfecto, and words of the pampa explained in the text. About 7,800 words.
