This article contains a MovaReader adaptation of El sí de las niñas (The Maidens’ Consent), the comedy by Leandro Fernández de Moratín first staged in 1806, retold in simple Spanish as a story with dialogue in 14 chapters that follow its three acts. During one night at an inn in Alcalá de Henares, the wealthy fifty-nine-year-old Don Diego prepares to marry sixteen-year-old Paquita, just out of a convent, while her mother Doña Irene answers for her and the maid Rita helps her keep a secret love for a young officer called Don Félix. Level A2 suits learners who know the past tenses: sentences of about 9 words, the pretérito indefinido and imperfecto, and plenty of dialogue with usted. About 7,000 words.
