Ukrainian books for B2

B2 is where the complete Ukrainian texts begin: no adaptations, the originals as printed in editions of 1919-1960, with the spelling of those editions. Here are six books by Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky (Intermezzo, Dorohoiu tsinoiu, Without a Wedding, Fata Morgana and two story collections), four by Ivan Franko (his animal tales, Little Myron, The Jay’s Wing and Other Stories and The Great Noise), three by Volodymyr Vynnychenko (two story collections and the novella The Poor), two by Stepan Vasylchenko, Borys Hrinchenko’s school stories, Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky’s Mykola Dzheria, Ivan Kotliarevsky’s play with songs Natalka Poltavka and the lyrical prose of Dniprova Chaika.

The level's books side by side

The catalog measures the average sentence length and the share of long words, 9 letters or more, and counts dialect and old forms. On this shelf sentences average 8-16 words, and long words make up 6-10% of the text, from one word in 16 in Intermezzo to almost one in ten in The Moment and Other Stories and The Great Noise. The sentences are short because the prose of the time is full of dialogue, except in Mykola Dzheria and Dniprova Chaika’s pieces, with their long descriptions; the difficulty is in the vocabulary: village and folk words and older forms such as од for від or смерти for смерті. In the C1 books long words reach 10%, or dialect fills every page.

Are these the original texts?

Yes. All 19 are complete texts, not adaptations, as printed in editions of 1919-1960: Kotsiubynsky’s Works of 1955, Franko’s Works in 20 volumes, Vasylchenko’s Complete Works of 1927-1929, Vynnychenko’s Works of 1929-1930, Hrinchenko’s Works of 1928, Dniprova Chaika’s Works of 1919, the 1926 Kyiv edition of Mykola Dzheria and a 1937 edition of Natalka Poltavka. The spelling is that of those editions. Most story collections are the catalog’s own selections from those volumes.

How is B2 different from B1 in this catalog?

B1 holds adaptations in simple modern Ukrainian, with 11-12 words per sentence and a long word once in 17 to once in 23. At B2 the originals keep their folk vocabulary and older forms, and long words make up 6-10% of the text.

How long does a book take?

From one hour to eleven: the books run from about 4,000 words (Intermezzo) to about 37,900 (The Great Noise).

What should I read after B2?

The C1 shelf: Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, Cheremshyna’s Verkhovyna and Stefanyk’s two collections, with dialect on every page, Vasylchenko’s Talent, Khvylovy’s five books, and Franko’s four novels, from Boa constrictor to Crossed Paths.
