The level's books side by side

The catalog measures the average sentence length and the share of long words, 9 letters or more, and counts dialect and old forms. A book reaches C1 in one of two ways. Franko’s novels, Khvylovy’s books and Vasylchenko’s Talent have a long word about once in ten words or more often (up to one in eight in Ivan Ivanovych), against 6-10% of the text on the B2 shelf, and Franko’s add 12-15 words per sentence. Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors, Verkhovyna and Stefanyk’s stories have fewer long words but dialect on every page: Hutsul полонина, ґазда, мольфар in Kotsiubynsky and Cheremshyna, Pokuttia шо, коби, аді in Stefanyk. Khvylovy’s texts also keep the spelling of 1927-1930, such as инший for інший.

Before you read

Are these the original texts?

Yes, all 14 are complete texts: Kotsiubynsky from his Works of 1955, Stefanyk from his Works of 1942, Cheremshyna from a 1940 edition, Vasylchenko from his Complete Works of 1927, Khvylovy from his Works of 1927-1930 and Franko from his Works in 20 volumes, 1957-1960. Boryslav Laughs is unfinished and ends where Franko stopped. In Crossed Paths about two pages missing from the 1960 scan come from an earlier edition, brought to the same spelling. The story collections are the catalog’s own selections.

How is C1 different from B2 in this catalog?

In vocabulary more than in sentence length. The B2 books have 8-16 words per sentence and long words make up 6-10% of the text; at C1 Franko’s novels, Khvylovy’s books and Vasylchenko’s Talent reach 10-13%, and the dialect of Kotsiubynsky, Cheremshyna and Stefanyk makes even short sentences hard.

How long does a book take?

From one hour to 27: from about 4,700 words in I (Romanticism) to about 98,000 in Crossed Paths, which takes 16-27 hours.

What should I read after C1?

There is no C2 shelf for Ukrainian yet. The biggest test on this shelf is Crossed Paths: about 98,000 words with the legal and political vocabulary of a Galician town around 1900.
