Mom drove us to Grandpa's house at noon. We came through the side gate quietly. Grandpa sat in the garden and read the newspaper. He wore his old brown hat and looked calm.
We sang when he saw us on the lawn. He stood up fast and gave us big hugs. His eyes looked happy, and he told us we made his day. He said he did not expect so many guests.
Lily set the table on the wooden deck. She put plates, forks, and napkins in neat rows. Jake brought juice and water from the kitchen. He also brought glasses on a small tray.
Grandma came out with a large cake. She wore her favourite blue apron. The cake had candles that we lit together. The flames shone in the soft afternoon light.
Grandpa blew out the candles and made a wish. We ate cake and drank tea in the warm sun. Grandpa told old stories about his first job in the city. He spoke about a boss who taught him patience.
After lunch Jake and I took photos under the apple tree. Grandpa wore his old hat and smiled wide. Lily drew a quick picture of all of us. She gave the drawing to Grandma before we left.
We played a short game Grandpa taught us years ago. He ran slowly across the grass and laughed. We felt lucky to have him near us. Even Mom ran once and lost her shoe near the path.
Uncle Ben came later with a small gift. He brought cheese and bread from a farm shop. He told Grandpa about a trip he took to the coast last month.
Before we left, I gave Grandpa my card. He read every word and kept it in his pocket. Grandma told us the party went perfectly. She said the house felt full of love all afternoon.
We drove home as the sky turned pink. Mom said Grandpa looked younger that afternoon. I thought about the songs we sang and the cake we ate. Jake said he wanted to visit again soon.
That Sunday showed how small plans can bring joy. We made food, we brought gifts, and we came with love. Grandpa told us he would remember the day for a long time. I kept my card notes in a box on my desk all week.
