I woke late and ran to the station. I took the seven forty train to college. I wore my grey coat and carried coffee in a cup. The platform felt crowded and loud.
I sat by the window and read notes for class. A friend came and spoke about our group project. We wrote ideas on a small pad between stops. She told me about a book she read over the weekend.
At Central Station many people got off. I stood to let an older woman pass. I forgot my bag under the seat for a moment. My mind stayed on the project deadline.
The doors closed and the train left the platform. I looked down and saw the empty space beside me. My bag was gone, and I felt cold inside. I knew my laptop and keys were inside it.
I told the conductor at the next stop. He spoke into his radio and wrote my name. He said staff would search the carriage that returned east. He gave me a form and told me to stay calm.
I got off and bought a ticket back one stop. I ran along the platform when the train came in. A cleaner held my bag near the door and smiled. She said she found it under seat twelve.
I thanked her and checked my laptop inside. Everything stayed safe, and I felt relief. She told me bags were lost on busy mornings often. She said many students forgot items after crowded stops.
I took a later train and still arrived on time. My teacher began the lesson as I came in quietly. I told her the short story after class. She gave me advice about keeping tags on my bag.
I wrote her words in my notebook and nodded. My friend bought me tea to help me calm down. We sat in the café and spoke about safer habits on trains.
After college I went home and told my parents. Dad made dinner while Mom listened carefully. They said mistakes happen and I handled the problem well. Mom gave me a bright tag for the handle.
That Tuesday taught me to stay alert in crowds. I lost my bag, I forgot one stop, but I found help fast. I kept the tag on my bag all week and never left it under a seat again.
