The road twisted through green fields as we drove toward the forest. We stopped once for coffee and continued up the winding hill road. Pine trees appeared on both sides when we climbed higher.
We arrived at the campsite before lunch. Other families already pitched their tents near a stream. We waved at a couple with two friendly dogs. The ranger pointed us toward a flat area under tall pines.
Marco and I helped Dad set up our tent. Mom arranged chairs around a folding table near the fire pit. We unpacked food boxes and water bottles by the entrance. The place looked peaceful in the soft afternoon light.
In the late afternoon we walked along a forest trail behind the camp. We stopped at a wooden lookout and watched the valley below. Marco photographed a hawk that circled above the trees. Birds called from hidden branches all around us.
We returned to camp and collected dry wood for an evening fire. Dad showed us how to build a safe ring with stones. We talked quietly and listened to the stream nearby. The air smelled like pine needles and warm earth.
Mom cooked pasta on a portable stove at dinner time. She added herbs she dried at home last autumn. We ate together as orange light filled the western sky. Stars appeared slowly when darkness arrived.
We stayed near the fire and told stories about school and work. Marco described a funny scene from his drama class. I talked about a history project on local farmers. Everyone relaxed before an early night.
On Sunday morning we walked to a small waterfall nearby. We photographed the water and rested on a flat rock in the sun. Before we left, we cleaned the campsite and packed our bags carefully. Dad thanked the ranger when we passed the gate.
The trip ended with tired smiles in the car. We enjoyed the quiet hills and long talks near the fire. We planned to camp at Pine Hill again next summer. That week in July stayed in our memory for a long time.
