For a week we planned meals and checked the weather forecast on our phones every evening after work. Tom borrowed a tent from his cousin and cleaned the poles in his garden behind the house. Anna shopped for fruit, bread, and cheese while I packed a first-aid kit and extra socks in a dry bag. Everyone wanted a quiet weekend without screens, alarms, or long travel plans across the country by train.
We drove there on Friday after work along a narrow country road with few cars and open fields. Tom brought the tent and a camping stove in his old car with enough space for our bags. I brought sleeping bags from my flat and rolled them tight to save room in the trunk for food boxes. Anna packed tea bags and a small pot for morning drinks near the fire pit by the lake.
We arrived before sunset and set up near the trees away from the strongest wind on the shore. Tom built a fire pit with stones from the beach and cleared leaves from the ground carefully with his boots. Anna cut vegetables for soup while I filled bottles with lake water and filtered it through a clean cloth twice. The air smelled of pine and wet grass as the light turned soft over the hills across the water surface.
We shared soup and bread as the sky turned orange above the lake and the birds returned to the trees. A light breeze moved the tent lines gently without breaking them during the early evening hour. Tom shared a funny story about a mountain trip from last year with his brother in the north. We laughed near the fire while the lake grew dark and still under a clear sky.
When night came, we heard owls and small animals in the bushes behind our site near the forest path. I woke early and saw mist over the lake before anyone else stirred in the tent near the water. Anna prepared tea on the stove, and we enjoyed it in silence on folding chairs facing the calm surface. The morning was peaceful and slow, with no phones and no traffic noise anywhere around the campsite or the road.
After breakfast we swam in the cold water for ten minutes and dried off in the sun on flat rocks by the shore. Tom ran along the path and came back with red cheeks and wet hair from the morning mist.
