I came through the door at nine o'clock and hung my coat in the staff room behind the counter area. The manager, Mr Cole, met me with a friendly smile and a printed name badge for my shirt pocket. He wore a grey cardigan and carried a cup of tea while he unlocked the till and turned on the warm lights. He showed me the staff room, the stockroom, and the main shop floor step by step before customers arrived at ten.
We spoke about my schedule and my tasks for the week during a short meeting at the front desk near the window. He explained that I should study the store guide before the shop opened to customers at ten o'clock sharp on Monday. I sat at a desk and noted ideas in a new notebook with a blue pen from the supply shelf. The pages looked empty but full of possibility on that quiet morning before the first bell on the door rang softly.
When customers arrived, I stood near the front desk and greeted each person with a polite smile and hello. A woman asked for a travel book about Italy for her daughter's trip abroad next month during summer break. I found it on a shelf by the window and handed it to her with a bookmark from the counter jar. She paid at the register and thanked me for the quick help before she left with a paper bag and receipt.
At lunch I enjoyed a sandwich in the staff room and listened to Jess describe the shop routine in detail over tea. Jess explained that the shop organized a festival last summer in the park nearby with local authors and poets. She said many writers arrived and shared short passages from their books to a small crowd under white tents. I listened carefully and decided the job sounded interesting and creative for someone who loves stories and quiet rooms full of paper.
In the afternoon I helped carry boxes from the stockroom and stacked them by genre labels on the wooden floor. Mr Cole showed me how to sort new titles by author and place stickers on the spines correctly without overlap.
