At midday the coordinator organized a short break in a side room. We drank tea and talked with other volunteers about their routines. An older man described how he started volunteering after he retired. Emma listened carefully and asked polite questions about the schedule.
In the afternoon we helped load packed boxes into a delivery van. Two drivers checked addresses on a printed list. We carried lighter boxes while staff members handled heavier crates. Rain started outside, but everyone continued until the van departed.
During our third week we sorted fresh fruit that a market delivered early. We removed damaged apples and oranges from the crates. We washed our hands and placed clean fruit in plastic trays. The smell of citrus filled the warm room near the back door.
Ms Cole visited once and photographed our team for the school newsletter. She thanked Emma and me for staying committed through cold mornings. We felt proud when students read the article online. Our classmates asked how they could join the project next term.
On the final Saturday the manager invited volunteers to share a simple lunch. We sat on folding chairs and talked about what we learned. She explained how donations arrived from schools, churches, and small businesses. The numbers surprised us because the need looked larger than we expected.
Emma and I returned to school on Monday and presented a short report in class. We described the sorting process and the packing routine we followed each week. Ms Cole posted our photos on the classroom wall. Several students signed up for the spring volunteer list.
Last winter taught us that regular effort changed daily life for many neighbours.
