I hope your week started well. You asked about our weekend train trip to York, so I wanted to share the story while the details stay fresh in my mind. My partner Sam and I traveled by rail on Saturday morning and returned on Sunday evening.
We booked tickets online last month when a discount appeared on the railway website. On Friday evening we packed light bags and printed the reservation codes in case the phone battery died on the platform. Sam packed tea bags and biscuits while I packed a warm scarf because the forecast predicted cold wind near the old city walls.
We arrived at the station before seven and joined a short queue at the ticket machine. The train departed on time, and we watched fields and small villages pass outside the window. Sam dozed for twenty minutes while I read a guidebook and marked places we hoped to visit near the river.
In York we walked from the station to our guesthouse on a quiet side street. The owner greeted us with keys and explained where breakfast started at eight. We dropped our bags, washed our hands, and continued toward the cathedral because Sam wanted photos of the stained glass in the afternoon light.
We visited a market hall near the centre and tasted cheese from a local farm. Later we climbed narrow steps to a viewpoint and looked over red rooftops and church towers. Rain started briefly, so we entered a café and ordered soup while tourists dried their coats near the radiator.
On Sunday we followed a signed path along the river and passed gardens where ducks gathered near the bank. We photographed an old bridge and talked with a couple who mapped walking routes for visitors. Before our return train we packed leftover bread for the journey and thanked the guesthouse owner at the door.
