I rang Mr Webb's bell after lunch when I saw light in his garage window. He heard the bell and came to the door with grease on his hands and a calm smile. He looked at the bike and said he could fix it before evening if the spare parts were in his box.
He took the bike into his garage and found a spare link in a metal tin on the shelf. He showed me how the parts fit together on the rear wheel near the gears. I stood beside him and held a torch while he worked in silence for half an hour.
Mr Webb gave me advice about oil and air in the tires before long rides. He told stories about bikes he fixed for students on our street last year. One boy broke two chains in one month because he rode too fast on rough paths near the school field.
When he finished, I rode around the block to test the wheels on the quiet road. The bike felt smooth and quiet again on the pavement under the trees. I thanked him and brought him a jar of honey from our kitchen cupboard as a small gift.
He smiled and said neighbors should help each other when problems come suddenly without warning. I felt grateful and wrote his tips in my phone notes before dinner with my family. My dad heard the story and gave Mr Webb a bottle of tea at the gate on Monday morning.
That Sunday taught me that small problems can bring people closer on a quiet street. I broke my chain, I walked home slowly, but a kind neighbor fixed everything in one afternoon. I kept the bike clean all week and rode carefully on the same path without any fear on the next Saturday ride.
