Sam visits a transport museum. He reads a quiz about London's first Underground railway. The quiz says that it was the world's first underground railway. It opened in 1863. Did London have an underground railway before it? No, it didn't. Its name was the Metropolitan Railway.

Did the railway run between Paddington and Farringdon? Yes, it did. The first route had seven stops. Did many people try it on its first day? Yes, they did. Around 40,000 passengers rode the new railway that day.

What did the first trains use? They used steam engines. They didn't use electric power. The carriages had first, second, and third class compartments. Did all passengers travel in the same class? No, they didn't.

How did workers make most of the tunnels? They used a method called cut and cover. Did workers make most tunnels with this method? Yes, they did. Workers used this method for most tunnels on the first route.

Sam reads one more question. When did the last steam passenger train run on the Metropolitan line? It ran in 1961. Did steam trains disappear in 1863? No, they didn't. They ran for many years after the first journey.

Sam writes his answers. He doesn't write "electric power" for the first trains. He doesn't forget the seven stops. "The first Underground railway used steam trains," he writes.

Did you know that London's first Underground railway used steam? What did you find surprising? Did you want to travel on the first train?
