I . The Big Egg It is summer , and the country is lovely . The corn is yellow , like gold . The oats are green . In the fields there are big piles of hay . A stork walks in a field on his long red legs . He talks and talks . And he talks in Egyptian ! His mother taught him this language . Around the fields there are big , dark woods . In the woods there are deep lakes . In a sunny place there is an old farm . The house stands next to a deep river . Between the house and the water there are tall plants with huge leaves . The leaves are so big that a small child can stand under them . It is wild and green there , like the middle of a forest . Under one of the leaves , a mother duck sits on her nest . She is waiting for her babies . But the duck is tired now . Her babies take a long time to come out . And nobody comes to see her . The other ducks like to swim in the river . They do not want to climb up the bank and sit under a leaf for a chat . “ Oh , this is taking so long ! ” thinks the duck . “ When can I see my children ? ” Then one day , an egg goes “ crack ” . Then another egg . And another . A little head comes out of each egg . “ Peep , peep ! ” say the babies . “ Quack , quack ! ” says their mother . The babies try to say “ quack ” too . They do it as well as they can . Then they look all around them at the big green leaves . Their mother lets them look for a long time . Green is good for the eyes . “ How big the world is ! ” say the babies . They have much more room now than inside the egg . “ Do you think this is all the world ? ” says their mother . “ Oh , no ! The world goes on past the garden . It goes all the way to the priest’s field . But I never go that far . ” Then she stands up and looks into the nest . “ Are you all out now ? ” she asks . “ No , not all of you . The biggest egg is still here . How long must I wait for this one ? I am so tired of it ! ” But she sits down on the nest again . After a while , a visitor comes . It is an old duck from the farm . “ Hello ! How are you ? ” asks the old duck . “ One egg will not break , ” says the mother . “ But look at the others ! Are they not the prettiest little ducks in the world ? They look just like their father . And he never comes to see me ! ” “ Let me see that egg , ” says the old duck . “ I know this kind of egg . It is a turkey’s egg . I sat on turkey eggs once . Oh , what trouble I had with the young ones ! They were afraid of the water . I quacked and I called , but they would not go in . Listen to me . Leave it here . Go to the water and teach the other children to swim . ”
