VIII . Hamelin Remembers Poor Hamelin ! It is a very sad town now . Many rich men in Hamelin remember some words from the Bible . The words say this : it is very hard for a rich man to get into heaven . Now these men understand the words . They loved their money too much , and now their children are gone . The Mayor sends men to the east and the west . He sends them to the north and the south . He tells them , “ Find the Piper ! We will give him silver and gold , as much as he wants . He only needs to come back . And he must bring our children with him ! ” The men look and look . But they never find him . At last the people understand . The Piper is gone for ever , and the children are gone with him . So the town makes a new rule . On every important paper , people must write the date . Next to the date , they must write one more thing . It is the number of years since the twenty - second of July , 1376 . That was the day of the Piper and the children . On that last day , the Piper and the children went down one street . The people give this street a new name . They call it the Pied Piper’s Street . Nobody may play music in this street . Nobody may play a pipe or a drum there . There are no happy inns in this street . There is no dancing . It is a quiet street , and a sad one . In front of the hill , the people put up a tall stone . On the stone , they write the story of the Piper and the children . They also make a picture of the story . It is in the big window of the church . That way , all the world can know how Hamelin lost its children . And the story is still there today . There is one more thing . There is a land far away . It is called Transylvania . Some people there have strange clothes and strange ways . Their neighbours often talk about them . These people have an old story . “ Long ago , our fathers and mothers were children in a town called Hamelin , in Germany . They all went into a dark place under the earth , in a big group . Then they came up out of the ground here . ” But how and why , they don’t know . Robert Browning wrote this story as a poem . He wrote it for a little boy called Willy . At the end , he tells Willy the lesson of the story . “ So , Willy , you and I must always pay what we owe . We must pay everybody , and most of all pipers ! Maybe a piper takes away our rats . Maybe he takes away our mice . It doesn’t matter . When we make a promise to somebody , we must keep it . ”
