I . A Single Man with a Fortune Everyone agrees on one truth : a single young man with a large fortune must be looking for a wife . He may not know it himself when he first comes to a new place . But the families around him know it very well , and each of them already sees him as the future husband of one of their girls . “ My dear Mr Bennet , ” said his wife one morning , “ have you heard that Netherfield Park has been let at last ? ” Mr Bennet said that he had not . “ It has been taken by a young man from the north of England , ” she went on . “ His name is Bingley , and he has four or five thousand a year . What a fine thing for our girls ! ” “ How can it have anything to do with them ? ” “ Oh , Mr Bennet , how can you be so tiresome ? You must know that I am thinking of his marrying one of them . You must go and visit him as soon as he comes . ” “ I see no reason for that , ” said her husband . “ You and the girls may go , or you may send them by themselves . That might be better , because you are as pretty as any of them , and Mr Bingley might like you the best of the party . ” Mr Bennet was a strange mix of quick wit , dry humour and quiet laziness , and after twenty - three years his wife still did not know what to make of him . Her own mind was much simpler . She was a woman of little sense and an uneven temper , and when she was unhappy she called it her nerves . The business of her life was to get her girls married . Its comfort was visiting and news . There were five Bennet sisters . Jane , the eldest , was the prettiest and the kindest . Elizabeth , the second , was clever and lively , and she was her father’s favourite . Mary read serious books and liked to give her opinion about them . Kitty and Lydia , the two youngest , thought of nothing but officers , ribbons and dancing . The family lived at Longbourn , a mile from the small town of Meryton . When Mr Bennet died , however , the house would not go to his wife or to his girls . By law it had to pass to a man , and the nearest man in the family was a cousin they had never met , a Mr Collins . In the end Mr Bennet was one of the first men to visit Mr Bingley . He did not tell his family , and he enjoyed their complaints for a whole day before he told them the truth . Mrs Bennet was full of joy . “ What a good father you have , girls ! ” she cried , as soon as he had left the room .
