I . The Bishop of Digne In the year 1815 , the bishop of the small town of Digne , in the south of France , was an old man called Charles Myriel . The poor people of the town called him Monseigneur Bienvenu , which means “ Welcome ” , because his door was never locked and anyone could come in . He lived in a small house with his sister , Mademoiselle Baptistine , and an old servant , Madame Magloire . The town had given him a large and beautiful palace , but he had given it to the hospital and moved into the hospital’s little house himself . He gave nearly all his money to the poor . He kept only a few things from his old life : six sets of silver forks and spoons , a big silver ladle for soup , and two silver candlesticks . One evening at the beginning of October , a man walked into Digne just before sunset . He was about forty - six , strong and broad , with short grey hair and a hard face burned by the sun . He wore an old yellow shirt , torn trousers and a leather cap , and he carried a heavy bag on his back and a thick stick in his hand . He had walked all day , and he was hungry and very tired . He went first to the best inn in the town and asked for a meal and a bed . He had money and offered to pay . But the innkeeper looked at him for a long time , then wrote a few words on a piece of paper and sent a boy to the town hall . When the boy came back , the innkeeper said , “ I cannot give you anything . Go away . ” “ Why not ? ” asked the man . “ I have told you that I can pay . ” “ Because I know who you are . Your name is Jean Valjean . ” It was the same wherever he went : at a small tavern they threw him out , and at a farmhouse a peasant shut the door in his face . He even tried to sleep in a dog’s kennel , but the dog bit him and he had to run away . At the prison he asked to spend the night in a cell , and the guard told him that he would have to get himself arrested first . In the end he lay down on a stone bench in the square in front of the cathedral . An old woman who was coming out of the church saw him there . “ Have you knocked at that door ? ” she asked , and she pointed to a small house across the square . “ No . ” “ Then knock there . ” Inside , the bishop was sitting at the table with his sister . Madame Magloire was talking about the thieves who had been seen in the town and saying that the door should have a lock . Then there was a loud knock . “ Come in , ” said the bishop . The door opened , and the man with the bag stood there . The two women stepped back in fear , but the bishop looked at him calmly .
