I . Mrs Lynde Is Surprised Mrs Rachel Lynde lived just where the main road of Avonlea dipped down into a little hollow with a brook running through it . Her kitchen window looked out on that road , and very little happened on it that Mrs Rachel did not see . She was a busy woman who ran the Sewing Circle , helped with the Sunday school and still found time to watch her neighbours . One afternoon in early June she was sitting at her window , knitting a cotton quilt , when she saw Matthew Cuthbert drive past . He was wearing his best suit and a white collar , and he was driving the buggy with the sorrel mare . This was a great surprise , because Matthew was the shyest man alive . He hated to go among strangers or to any place where he might have to talk . He lived quietly at Green Gables with his sister Marilla , and he hardly ever left the farm . “ Now where is Matthew Cuthbert going in his best clothes in the middle of the afternoon ? ” said Mrs Rachel to herself . “ He ought to be sowing turnip seed on his big field . If he were going to the doctor , he wouldn’t wear a white collar . Something has happened , and I won’t have a minute’s peace until I find out what it is . ” So after tea she walked up to Green Gables . The house stood far back from the road , at the end of a long lane , among its apple trees . Marilla Cuthbert was sitting in the kitchen , and she was knitting too . She was a tall , thin woman with grey hair , a straight back and a firm mouth . People thought that she was hard , but there was a little sense of humour hidden in the corners of her lips . “ I saw Matthew go by this afternoon , ” said Mrs Rachel . “ I was afraid he was going for the doctor . ” “ No , I’m quite well , ” said Marilla . “ Matthew has gone to Bright River . We’re getting a little boy from an orphan asylum in Nova Scotia , and he’s coming on the train tonight . ” If Marilla had said that Matthew had gone to meet a kangaroo from Australia , Mrs Rachel could not have been more surprised . For several seconds she said nothing at all . “ Are you serious , Marilla ? ” she asked at last . “ Of course I am , ” said Marilla calmly . “ We’ve been thinking about it all winter . Matthew is getting old , you know , and his heart troubles him . We can’t find good help on the farm . The French boys learn the work and then go off to the factories . So we decided to get an orphan boy of ten or eleven . He can do the jobs around the farm , and we’ll give him a good home and send him to school . Mrs Alexander Spencer is going to the asylum to get a little girl for herself , so we asked her to choose a boy for us . ” Mrs Rachel shook her head , because she always thought that it was her duty to speak her mind .
