“ I’ll never have another bosom friend , ” said Diana . “ I don’t want to have one . I couldn’t love anybody as I love you . ” “ Oh , Diana , you love me ? I thought you liked me , of course , but I never hoped that you loved me . Nobody has ever loved me that I can remember . Will you give me a lock of your black hair to keep forever ? ” Diana gave her one , and Anne cut it off with Marilla’s sewing scissors . When she came home , she told Marilla that she would never have another friend as long as she lived . The next morning , to Marilla’s great surprise , Anne came down with her books in her arms . “ I’m going back to school , ” she said . “ It’s all that is left for me in life now that my friend has been cruelly taken away from me . At school I can at least look at her and think about the days that have gone . ” All the pupils were glad to see Anne back . Diana was not allowed to talk to her , but she passed her a little note every day . Anne threw herself into her lessons with all her heart . She was soon at the top of her class again , and only Gilbert Blythe could compete with her . Sometimes Gilbert was at the top , and sometimes Anne was . Gilbert clearly enjoyed the competition . Anne did not enjoy it , because she was too proud . She would not even admit to herself that Gilbert was her rival , because then she would have had to admit that he existed , and she pretended that he did not . X . Anne to the Rescue In January the Prime Minister of Canada came to Charlottetown to speak at a great public meeting . Mrs Rachel went to hear him , and she took Marilla with her , because Marilla was interested in politics too . They would be away for the night , so Anne and Matthew had the cosy kitchen at Green Gables to themselves . Anne was studying her geometry , and Matthew was reading a farmers ’ newspaper , when there were quick footsteps outside . The door flew open , and Diana ran in with a white face and a shawl thrown over her head . “ Oh , Anne , do come quick , ” she cried . “ Minnie May is awful sick . She’s got croup , Young Mary Joe says . Father and Mother have gone to town to hear the Prime Minister , and there’s nobody to go for the doctor . Minnie May is awful bad , and Young Mary Joe doesn’t know what to do . Oh , Anne , I’m so scared ! ” Without a word Matthew reached for his cap and coat and went out to harness the horse . “ He’s gone to Carmody for the doctor , ” said Anne , who was already putting on her coat . “ Matthew and I are such kindred spirits that I can read his thoughts without words . Don’t cry , Diana . I know exactly what to do for croup . You forget that Mrs Hammond had twins three times . When you look after three pairs of twins , you naturally get a lot of experience . They all had croup regularly . Just wait until I get the bottle of medicine . ”
