That winter Anne and Diana had many good times together . In February Anne was allowed to go with Diana to a concert in the town hall , and afterwards she was to sleep at Orchard Slope . Coming home late and excited , the two girls decided to race each other to the bed in the spare room . They ran into the dark room , jumped onto the bed together and landed on something that moved and cried out . It was Diana’s great - aunt , Miss Josephine Barry , an old and very rich lady from Charlottetown . She had arrived for a visit while they were at the concert , and she had gone to sleep in the spare room . Miss Barry was furious . The next morning she said that she would go home at once . She had promised to pay for Diana’s music lessons , but now she said she would not pay a penny for a girl who behaved like that . The whole Barry family was in despair . Anne felt that it was all her fault , because the race had been her idea . So she went bravely to Orchard Slope and knocked on the door of the sitting room , where the old lady was knitting by the fire . “ Please , Miss Barry , it was all my fault about jumping into bed on you last night , ” she said , trembling . “ I suggested it . Diana would never have thought of such a thing , I am sure . Diana is a very ladylike girl , Miss Barry . So you must see how unjust it is to blame her . If you must be angry with somebody , please be angry with me . I am so used to it that I can bear it much better than Diana can . ” Miss Barry’s black eyes began to shine with interest . “ But there is our side of it too , ” Anne went on bravely . “ Have you any imagination , Miss Barry ? If you have , please put yourself in our place . We didn’t know there was anybody in that bed , and you nearly frightened us to death . ” Miss Barry laughed . Then she asked Anne to sit down and tell her about herself . In the end she did not go home that day . She stayed for a whole month , and she paid for Diana’s music lessons after all . When she left , she told Anne that she must come and visit her in town . XI . A Cake and a Roof That spring Mr Phillips left Avonlea , and at his last lesson every girl in the school cried , Anne included , although she had never liked him . In the same year a new minister came to Avonlea , Mr Allan , with his pretty young wife . Anne loved Mrs Allan from the first moment . She was kind and merry , and she taught the Sunday school class in such a way that Anne actually enjoyed asking questions . “ She’s a kindred spirit , ” Anne told Marilla . “ I knew it the minute I saw her . ”
