XII . Puffed Sleeves The new teacher was Miss Muriel Stacy , and Anne loved her as much as she loved Mrs Allan . Miss Stacy was young and kind , and she believed that children learnt best when they were happy . She took her pupils out into the fields and woods to study nature , and every Friday afternoon they did exercises and recited poems . Under her teaching Anne began to blossom . She studied hard , she read every book that she could find , and she grew taller every month . As Christmas came near , Miss Stacy and her pupils planned a concert in the town hall . Anne was to recite two poems and take part in two dialogues . She practised them every evening in the kitchen until Marilla was tired of hearing them . One cold December evening Matthew came into the kitchen while Anne and a group of her schoolmates were practising a dialogue . He sat down in the corner and watched them shyly , and after a while he noticed that there was something different about Anne . He thought about it all evening , and at last he understood . Anne was not dressed like the other girls . All of them had pretty dresses in bright colours , with big puffed sleeves . Marilla made Anne’s dresses plain and dark , with plain , tight sleeves . Matthew decided that Anne should have one pretty dress . Christmas was only two weeks away , and a dress would be the right present . But he knew that he could not ask Marilla , because she would laugh at him . So he went to a shop in Carmody , Samuel Lawson’s , because he thought that a man would serve him there . Unfortunately , Mr Lawson had a new assistant , Miss Harris , a young lady with curled hair , a very wide smile and bracelets that rattled every time she moved her hands . Matthew was immediately so confused that he forgot what he had come for . “ What can I do for you this evening , Mr Cuthbert ? ” asked Miss Harris brightly . “ Have you any , well now , any garden rakes ? ” said Matthew . Miss Harris looked rather surprised , as she well might , because it was the middle of December . But she found a rake . Then Matthew bought twenty pounds of brown sugar , which he did not need either . He drove home with the rake and the sugar and no dress . At last he went to Mrs Rachel for help . Mrs Rachel was delighted . She said that she would buy the cloth and make the dress herself , and that she would make it with the newest sleeves . “ Marilla dresses that child in plain clothes because she doesn’t want her to be vain , ” she said to herself . “ But it only makes her feel different from the others . I’m glad Matthew has some sense . ”
