“ I’m very much obliged to you , ” she said proudly , and she turned to go . But Gilbert jumped out too and put his hand on her arm . “ Anne , ” he said quickly , “ look here . Can’t we be good friends ? I’m awfully sorry I made fun of your hair that time . I only meant it for a joke , and it was so long ago . I think your hair is awfully pretty now , honest I do . Let’s be friends . ” For a moment Anne hesitated . Something in Gilbert’s eyes , which were half shy and half eager , was very good to see , and her heart gave a strange little jump . But then she remembered the slate and the blackboard and the whole school laughing at her . “ No , ” she said coldly . “ I shall never be friends with you , Gilbert Blythe , and I don’t want to be ! ” “ All right ! ” Gilbert jumped into his boat with an angry red face . “ I’ll never ask you to be friends again , Anne Shirley . And I don’t care either ! ” He rowed away fast , and Anne walked up the path with her head held high . But she had a strange feeling of regret , and she almost wished that she had answered him differently . XIV . The Queen’s Class That autumn Anne went to Charlottetown with Diana to visit Miss Josephine Barry . They stayed in her big , elegant house and went to the great autumn fair . Anne enjoyed every minute of it . But when she came home to Green Gables , she said that the best part of the whole visit had been the coming home . In November Miss Stacy made a suggestion that changed everything . She wanted to form a special class of her older pupils . They would study for the entrance examination to Queen’s Academy in Charlottetown . At Queen’s a student could train to be a teacher in one or two years . Marilla and Matthew talked it over , and Marilla told Anne that she could join the class . “ When Matthew and I took you to bring up , we decided that we would do the best we could for you and give you a good education , ” she said . “ I believe in a girl being fitted to earn her own living , whether she ever has to or not . You’ll have a home at Green Gables as long as Matthew and I are here , but nobody knows what is going to happen in this uncertain world . ” “ Oh , Marilla , thank you , ” said Anne , throwing her arms round her . “ I’ll study as hard as I can , and I’ll do my very best to be a credit to you . ” Diana was not going to join the class , because her parents did not intend to send her to Queen’s . Anne was very sorry about that . But Gilbert Blythe was in it , and so were Josie Pye , Ruby Gillis , Jane Andrews and several others . Anne and Gilbert were rivals more openly now than ever before . Gilbert never looked at Anne and never spoke to her . To her surprise , Anne discovered that she did not enjoy being ignored . She often remembered the day by the pond , and she wondered whether she would answer differently if she had the chance again .
