XV . A Queen’s Girl In September Anne went to Queen’s Academy . Marilla had made her several new dresses , and Matthew had made sure that they were pretty . On the last evening at home Anne put on her new evening dress and recited for them in the kitchen . Marilla looked at the tall girl with the shining eyes , and she remembered the strange child in the ugly dress who had arrived at Green Gables five years before . Tears came into her eyes . “ I was just thinking about the little girl you used to be , Anne , ” she said . “ And I was wishing that you could have stayed a little girl , even with all your strange ways . Now you’ve grown up and you’re going away . You look so tall and stylish and so different altogether that it seems as if you didn’t belong to Avonlea at all . ” “ Marilla ! ” Anne sat down in Marilla’s lap and took her face in both her hands . “ I’m not a bit changed , not really . I’m only cut down and branched out . The real me back here is just the same . It won’t make a bit of difference where I go or how much I change outside . At heart I shall always be your little Anne , who will love you and Matthew and dear Green Gables more and better every day of her life . ” The first evenings in her small room in town were bad ones , because Anne was terribly homesick for the Snow Queen and the stars over the hill at home . At Queen’s Anne decided to do something very difficult . Most students took two years to get the highest teaching certificate , the First Class licence . Anne decided to try to get it in one year . Gilbert Blythe had decided to do the same , and so they were in the same class again . Anne worked harder than she had ever worked before . Her old rivalry with Gilbert was as strong as ever , but she found that she no longer wanted to win only to defeat him . She wanted to win for the pleasure of doing her best , and she wished , more often than she would admit , that they were friends . Early in the winter the students heard that a new prize had been announced . It was called the Avery scholarship , and it would be given to the student with the best marks in English and English literature . The winner would receive two hundred and fifty dollars a year for four years at Redmond College , a real university . “ Wouldn’t Matthew be proud if I got to be a Bachelor of Arts ? ” Anne said to herself , and from that moment the Avery was her goal . The winter passed in hard work . In the spring came the final examinations , and then the long wait for the results . On the day the results were announced , Anne walked into the hall at Queen’s and saw a crowd of boys carrying Gilbert Blythe on their shoulders and shouting , “ Hurrah for Blythe , the gold medal winner ! ” For a moment Anne felt sick with disappointment . Gilbert had won the medal , and she had failed . Then somebody else shouted , “ Three cheers for Miss Shirley , winner of the Avery ! ”
